Chai Lai Sisters is a premium trekking company in the stunning mountains of Chiang Mai, Thailand. We are proud to be one of Thailand’s very few Karen women-led businesses. Through sustainable tourism we give back to the community and the jungle.

This is important because Indigenous people experience much higher rates of poverty, illiteracy, teen marriage and trafficking. We believe that responsible tourism can help preserve culture, rather than destroy it, because empowered women help their communities prosper.

Invest in Women

In most cultures, men hold more public, social and financial power than women. Any income from farming is usually given to the father of the family to manage and spend. But when women and girls earn income they reinvest far more of their income into their families, more money is spent on education, healthcare and savings for the future.

Chai Lai Sisters is owned and run by Karen women. This means that husbands and fathers in the villages get to see economic benefits and, in turn, prioritize education for their daughters.

When girls are educated, they are equipped with the courage and self-confidence to better themselves, their families, their communities and ultimately the next generation. They learn how to prevent illness and improve overall health, build and maintain infrastructure, manage personal and professional relationships, understand and advocate for basic rights and secure a livelihood.

Educated girls are also more likely to marry later and have fewer children. All over Southeast Asia today, there is widespread acceptance of spousal abuse and women are highly stigmatized for divorcing or separating from their husbands. This means many women continue to stay in abusive or unfulfilling relationships. Our goal is to help break that cycle through compassionate eco-tourism.

Safety and Security for Female Travelers

Traveling in remote parts of the world is thrilling, but it also comes with a great deal of vulnerability. Reports of sexual harassment and worse are unfortunately not uncommon for female travelers around the globe. Our goal, therefore, is not only to empower our female tour guides but also our female travelers. All women should have the right to feel safe and comfortable, wherever they are. Chai Lai Sisters brings women together to create a circle of female trust, security and safety.

Indigenous Guides

Our treks are run by local Indigenous tour guides who know the secrets of the jungle and mountains better than anyone. With their expert guidance, you can travel off the beaten track to remote hilltribe villages, swim in hidden waterfalls and explore lush jungles, and experience firsthand some of the most glorious views Thailand has to offer. All of our tour guides and mahouts are indigenous people from Northern Thailand. When you choose to travel with us, you not only get an immersive experience of hill tribe life, you also support the protection and evolution of indigenous culture.
